Privacy: the BitVoice apps

What the BitVoice phone apps for Android and iPhone collect, where it goes, and how to remove it. In short: the app talks only to the BitVoice phone system it was paired with, and to Google or Apple to be woken for calls. BioDream collects nothing about you through it.

Who runs what

BitVoice is a phone system that an organisation runs itself, or has someone run for it. The app is an extension of that phone system: your employer or whoever runs your BitVoice decides what it records and keeps, under their own privacy policy. BioDream LLC makes the app and the software; it does not run your phone system unless your organisation has chosen BioDream to host it.

What the app sends, and to whom

WhatSent toWhy
The pairing code, and the phone's model name (such as "Pixel 8")Your BitVoice serverTo pair the phone with your extension and show the administrator which phone it is
A device secret made when you pairYour BitVoice serverTo sign in as your extension without a password. It is kept on the phone encrypted with a key held by Android Keystore (or the iPhone's Keychain)
Your voice, and your camera when you choose videoYour BitVoice server, encrypted (SRTP)To make calls. Whether calls are recorded is set by whoever runs your BitVoice
A push token from Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) or AppleYour BitVoice serverSo it can wake the app for a call
For each call that wakes the app: a call ID, and the caller's number and nameGoogle or Apple's push service, through the push relay your BitVoice uses (BioDream's, or its own)To ring the phone and show who is calling. BioDream's relay passes these on and does not keep them

The app has no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and does not read your contacts, location, photos or other apps. It uses the camera only to scan the pairing code and, if you choose, for video calls.

Permissions

  • Microphone: to talk on calls.
  • Camera: to scan the pairing code, and for video if you choose it.
  • Notifications and full-screen calls: to ring and show incoming calls, over the lock screen.
  • Phone calls (self-managed): to put BitVoice calls on the phone's own call system, so they behave like phone calls with headsets, cars and other calls.

How long it is kept, and removing it

On the phone, the pairing stays until you press Unpair or uninstall the app; both delete it. Unpairing also tells your BitVoice server to forget the phone and its push token. An administrator can remove the phone from your extension at any time. Call history, recordings and voicemail live on your BitVoice server and are kept as whoever runs it decides; ask them to see or delete them.

Children

The app is for people whose organisation gave them a BitVoice extension. It is not meant for children.
